If
this video
is the one you refer to, the launch is not _that_ bad. There was a launch rod, the flight was stable, properly ignited (electrically), comparable to the
pumpkin chunkin
at one of the NORG launches.
Other than the lawn dart and the smoldering branches, I think you could clean up the procedure a bit (some kind of ejection device to make it tumble/featherweight recovery, use D12-P motors to prevent igniting the branches at burnout).
