Working with a High School Scout Group was created by fineberg
I am working with a Venture crew in Lexington, which is a co-ed scout troop of high school age kids. Most of them have never done rocketry, but I am concerned that if I start out with something too small it will lose their interest. What is your experience on this?

I am also concerned about cost. Something like an Aerotech Mustang is really easy to build, but it would be $80-$100 by the time they get a couple of motors. Any suggestions for something that would be big enough to be interesting, ideally that could fly <1000ft on D/E motors, but relatively easy to build and under $50 with motors.

I was thinking maybe an Executioner or a Big Daddy, but I am not a good judge of how easy it is to build something :-)

Thanks,
Sam

Check out the BMS 3" School Rocket.

www.balsamachining.com

The website only shows the 24mm motor version, but at NARAM, he was showing a 29mm as well. And at $18 a piece, you can't beat the price.

Here is my choice, the Estes HiFlier XL. You can get them for $15.99 from Hobbylinc.

They fly on C11, D12 and E9. It is a skill level 2 kit. I should get one for myselft.
The D12-5 two pack sells for $9.59.

Actually, Estes has one of their Pro Series II E2X rockets on sale, the Trajector . They have it for $15.99 down from $44.99. That's a great deal for a rocket like that. Easy build, fly's great on their 29mm E and F BP motors.

The Trajector is a great rocket and you can't beat the price. Do you think an E2X rocket is too basic for high school kids? The engines required for the kit are 29mm. That gets a bit pricy.
